Moisturizing your skin in cooler weather

About MOISTURIZERS : this cooler weather has me thinking about moisturizers. Love them!

Heavier coats + boots + thick creamy face and body butters!

Moisture comes from water and/or another true hydrator like aloe and glycerin.

So when we use Face Oils on our skin after washing, the structure of the oil is helping to prevent evaporation from the skin surface.

That is how an oil 'moisturizes' -- by keeping the water droplets from escaping.

It's a good practice to apply face oils to wet skin for that reason, right after washing and rinsing thoroughly.

Sometimes I add a few drops of face oil to a little water that I put in my hands, then I rub them together vigorously for a type of pseudo lotion mixture.

During drier months, I like mixing a creamy moisturizing lotion serum or balm with a drop of oil.

A 'face lotion' is a mixture of water or plant liquid (like aloe, a hydrosol, or herbal infusion or 'tea') with oils & vegetable butters or solids. This mixture is brought together by an emulsifier that binds them together.

'Lotions' add both moisture and have the capacity to trap that moisture in.

For really cold weather, face balms trap in moisture and add a layer of protection, like a shield almost. We make butters with honeycomb (beeswax) so that wax really helps protect against harsh conditions.
Some people with small pours avoid face balms because they can really clog pores depending on your skin type.

The best way to determine what kind of moisturizing ritual you currently need is to make regular appointments with your licensed Esthetician (we love Lavandula Skin Spa in Woodstock, GA).

According to the many skincare experts I interact with, they say the most important role of skincare is to maintain the 'barrier function', that is to do what is necessary to allow skin to perform its intended purpose -- which is to shield our internal cells and allow fluids to flow in a closed system.

By using the right moisturizer, we protect our skin from cracking and breaking -- which compromises the barrier.

AND hydrated moisturized skin comes from drinking fresh pure water, teas, and fresh pressed fruit and vegetable juices on a daily basis.
