How can cosmetic packaging improve performance and be more eco-friendly?

Many are returning to nature as a basis for effective high-performing beautiful skincare and cosmetics.

Moisturizers containing natural oils and formulas including shea butter instantly & gently give skin a dewy younger look.

Combining nutrient rich oils, vegetable butters and extracts with hydrating water provides silky creamy smooth luscious concoctions to pamper and enrich our skin.

How can we naturally maintain freshness with so many fabulous vitamins & minerals involved in plant-based formulas?

One answer: innovative packaging.

Beautiful packaging is necessary for the eye and soul.  Crisp fresh packaging reflects feelings about ourselves and how we want to be perceived by others.  Packaging sells.  And when intertwined with quality formulations, the result is a glad heart and strong skin cells that are more capable of maintaining and improving skin texture, smoothness, tone, and functions.

Airless packaging is both old & new.

As the founder of Dirty Beauty it is often asked of how we came up with our name - it came from a desire to communicate that natural beauty comes from the soil, or dirt, hence 'dirty beauty'.

It seems that people are often looking for a 'grandma story' when it comes to our origins.

Like maybe one of our grandmas used some secret formula involving dirt or something.

Well if there is a 'grandma' element this is it - airless packaging.

My pantry, right now, is lined with natural foods that my mother canned using fresh fruits and vegetables.

A visit to my grandparents home will yield the same results - food that they grew was correctly canned to keep it safe and fresh for use when the growing season for the year was completed.

Here we are now doing the same thing with skincare.

Using airless packaging technology to keep natural formulations fresher longer.  Like us, microorganisms need vitamins, minerals, and oxygen to grow.

Rigid plastics like Styrene Acrylonitrile (SAN) provide a barrier to keep air out and limits the ability of unwanted microorganisms to grow.

The pump system disallows air to be introduced into the product after the contents have been dispensed.

Further, the mechanism also provides more accurate dosing and near complete evacuation from the tube or jar resulting in less residual product waste.

Additionally, plants have cell walls as part of a system of defense to keep the plant healthy.

Essentially, when we extract plant nutrients for skincare and place them back into a protective airless environment, we can get the most out of the energy and nutrients the plant has developed using a system similar to one the plant has used itself.

Rigid plastics including SAN are classified as a #7 for recycling.

Recycling centers in your area can be found at http://www.earth911.com/

Super-concentrated products in Dirty Beauty airless packaging are used most effectively when applied to wet skin, and because it is concentrated, the products can even be mixed with water and/or Body Oils which makes the product last a long long time - Dirty Beauty Body Oils come in refillable packaging and water can be used from a home water source.

Concentrated Dirty Beauty products reduces the amount of materials which is a function of recycling, however, we have interest in even gentler packages.

At Dirty Beauty, refillable options are available when possible.

Outweighing the affects of some plastics by using glass, compostable bags, and refillable options is one current method we use to increase sustainability.

Innovation is the key as new packaging technology is engineered so we can gently use the benefits of the plant world while minimizing the negative impact of that use - and possibly improving it.
